Damon Albarn Is 'Up There With Hendrix,' Says Bobby Womack

Gorillaz guest vocalist Bobby Womack has said he believes Damon Albarn is as creative as Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles.Soul legend Womack, who made his live performance comeback after a stage absence of 15 years at the Gorillaz' recent Roundhouse shows, told The Sun that Albarn reminded him of some of the finest artists he has worked with.
"He's the same way [as Hendrix and Charles were]. He's very creative and thinks way out there, trying things that people don't try."
Womack -- who provided vocals for 'Stylo' and 'Cloud of Unknowing' on Gorillaz' third album 'Plastic Beach' -- also admitted he had no idea who Gorillaz were before Albarn approached them but is enjoying his time performing with the ever-expanding army of musicians and singers.
"There ain't no egos, these guys are cool," he said. "These guys know me better than I do."
Looking ahead to Gorillaz Autumn arena shows, including two dates at London's O2 Arena in September, Albarn told The Sun getting everyone together was a logistical nightmare: "You just don't get too stressed and accept that sometimes it's going to work out and sometimes it's not."

As someone who not only saw Jimi in concert 3 times, but worked in the busiest recording studio of that time (you may have heard of The Record Plant). Anyway ONLY ONE GUITARIST since that time has had Jimi's talent( I have no idea why he hasn't had the same success) he is the guy who played lead for a group called LIVING COLOR. I believe they had only one hit, "Cult of Personality" THIS IS THE ONLY one who had what Jimi had.

He is a great musician and artistic visionary in his own right. Remember this, Hendrix was a ground-breaker but due to poor lifestyle choices, had a very short not too prolific career. To say he was the greatest guitarist ever is wrong. He was an innovator, but many more talented players have long since surpassed him. Ray Charles, another brilliant performer, should not be compared to Albarn either. I don't remember Charles EVER being known as a writer of original music. He was an INTERPRETER of other's work. All of you haters need to actually find out about and listen to Gorillaz and especially Blur. Stylo is an amazing piece with a fantastic video. To the person who referred to Albarn's music as "baggy pants rap crap"--have you ever actually HEARD Albarn's music? Do you realize where he is from, or how old he is or what he has created???
May 20 2010 at 12:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywhen I see in print someone making a comparison to Jimi and Ray .. well, I'm going to assume that this person PLAYS INSTRUCTMENTS and writes music and songs!! all I can think of is .. perhaps this was all taken VERY much out of context in order to draw attention to it? one never knows how their words will be quoted or misquoted when doing an interview. that is benefit of the doubt... sorry, but I loved Jimi, still do and Ray was something else. no comparison in my eyes or ears...

They were both epic talents whose work will live forever. I am, and always will be a huge fan of both of them. But, for all you knocking Damon Albarn and the Gorillaz, I say don't get stuck in the past, do yourselves a favor, they are something special. Give them a chance, you won't regret it!

Hendrix musical ability crossed racial barriers and drew artists together and it's still going on today. He made a right-handed guitar work for a lefty
(he was a DaVinci that way!) and inspired millions to learn to play. My X-husband used to jump the fence at school when he was 12 to go home and learn to play to Jimi Hendrix, and while ditching is a bad thing, he's a marvelously talents guitarist in his own right. Growing up in Indiana, we used to walk the country roads listening on a transistor radio.....no one compares.
Even my own teenager is a Hendrix worshipper.
He died way too young.
Sorry folks. This guy, nore any other guitarist is not "up there with Hendrix". Whoever wrote this piece of drivel is obviously unfamiliar with the body of Hendrix's work. Whe shall not see the likes of Jimi again.....

dork, he has rappers in his album BUT he is a ROCK N ROLL artist. He incorporates RAP, ROCK AND DANCE music into his songs. Trying to bring everyone together. So SU and research who you are calling a street thug! He is whiter than bleached milk, and he was the singer and front man of Blur. Talk about being talking crap without knowing, you must SUCK as a musician lmao!
