Bret Michaels Suffers 'Warning Stroke,' Discovers Hole in His Heart
- Posted on May 20th 2010 8:54PM by Benjy Eisen
Professional rock star Bret Michaels was forced to return to the hospital this week to face his second serious health emergency in as many months. According to his official website, Michaels checked into the hospital after the left side of his body became numb. Doctors have said that Michaels suffered a "warning stroke," officially known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA). The good news is that he caught it early and -- thanks in part to his well-documented determination -- he has already been released as an outpatient. There is bad news, however, and that's that while undergoing tests and screenings, an ultrasound revealed a hole in Michael's heart, formally referred to as a patent forum ovale (PFO). A statement on Michael's home page from his neurosurgeon, Dr. Zabramski, says that the condition is "operable and treatable and we think we may have diagnosed the problem that caused the ... warning stroke; however we feel it is highly unlikely this is connected to the brain hemorrhage he suffered just a few weeks earlier."
Michaels, who has publicly fought diabetes his entire career, obviously just wants to get better and get back to being a full-time rock star -- in addition to fronting Poison, he has numerous solo pursuits and is a contestant in this season's 'The Celebrity Apprentice' reality TV show. Doctors say that he is very likely to make a full recovery -- his second major one in as many months -- but that despite his tenacity and determination, he is not quite up to speed just yet. We would make a pun using one of his hit song titles, such as 'Nothing But a Good Time' or 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn,' but the truth is, we just wish Michaels a healthy and speedy recovery.

After reading about HHT and rare blood vessel disorders, and hole in heart, it seems like common sense to me (even as a layman) that both the brain hemmorage and the warning stroke Bret suffered WERE INDEED RELATED! (as the blood vessel deformities plus heart hole prevented enough blood/oxygen supply pumped from his damaged heart from reaching the brain! Hence the hemmorage and warning stroke!
It really upsets me that doctors so routinely give opinions so assuredly stated as fact, that, in true fact ARE NOT TRUE or even close to truth, and do so out of sheer ignorance based on their own insolent EGO!
Bret, if you read this, please get treatment and take more than enough time to heal before you travel and perform again! STOP the drinking and smoking of anything too. You need to slow down and rest!
Its time to alter your lifestyle, spend more time with your family and less time on the road, performing under stressful situations, and being too rock-hard headed to
acknowledge your body's messages!
I DON'T WANT TO READ THAT YOU WERE FOUND DEAD IN YOUR VEHICLE OR HOTEL ROOM!!!!! Please, take care of you, first and foremost! You are loved by your family, and that makes you so lucky; don't take that for granted!
ALL THE BEST TO YOU!
Hey Bret , like a dear friend of mine would say "it's good to be here , it's good to be Anywhere , ya know what I mean " ;-)
X-mas 08 I had a warning stroke but did not go to the Hospital right away ,after spending 48hrs in hell , crawling to the bathroom to puke my guts out , having no balance...........decided to go , as soon as I arrived the nurses knew what had happen , after a few exams , found out , I had an Aneurysm , back right side of my brain , that needed attention after a few more exams , found the PFO that most likely caused the warning stroke :-(
they put 2 stints in my head went back to work in record time , no scares at all , a month later went back "St Joseph Hospital in Phoenix" to take care of the PFO , scheduled surgery was on a Friday afternoon , went to work in the AM , surgery PM , recovered overnight and part of Saturday , released in the PM , relaxed at home on Sunday and back on the horse on Monday and again no scares , Technology and Doctors are amazing .
Glad to be alive , take care , Phil G

Since reading about Bret Michael, it sounds like it could possibly be a rare blood vessel disorder called Osler, Weber, Rendu syndrome or HHT. Most doctors do not know about it, however there are specialist at HHT treatment centers around the world. Please learn more about it at www.hht.org. You could have it and not even know until some life-threatening stroke or brain hemorrhage. Keeping Bret Michaels in my prayers.
