Arcade Fire have at last given a taster of what to expect from their long-awaited third album -- the follow-up to 2007's 'Neon Bible' -- in the guise of a preview of their forthcoming 12-inch single, 'The Suburbs'/'Month of May,' on their website. And while consumers of music in digital format may lament the fact the new songs will be released on good old-fashioned vinyl, the previews are accessed by users spinning a virtual vinyl record on the band's website.
So not only do users have to judge what constitutes 45rpm to hear the songs as they're intended, conspiracy theorists will be able to play the virtual records backward as they search for hidden messages. The experience proves to be more fun than expected and there's a certain comfort to be had to hear vinyl scratches emanating from the digital medium of streamed music.
As previously reported on Spinner, Arcade Fire are scheduled to headline the sold-out Reading and Leeds festivals in August, and it's expected that the new album will land sometime around then. 'The Suburbs'/'Month of May' is mooted to be released within the next few weeks. We will announce more details as they come to hand.
