The Faces Re-form With Mick Hucknall

First the good news: The Faces have re-formed. Now the not-so-good news: The legendary early-'70s rock band's original singer, Rod Stewart, can't make it and is being replaced by Mick Hucknall. The new-look Faces -- who will also include former Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock in place of the late Ronnie Lane, as well as original guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Kenney Jones and keyboardist Ian McLagan -- will headline the Vintage at Goodwood festival in Sussex in August and plan to tour in January 2011.
Speaking to BBC News, Wood said that the Simply Red vocalist had "that electricity in his voice" and when they started rehearsing it was "as if no time had gone by and we were the same outfit."
They also refused to rule out Stewart rejoining the band at some stage but Wood claims that they "haven't got time to hang around.
"Mick's singing is hot and we're ready to go ... the time is right," he continued. "He's normally a romantic ballady singer, but he really rocks, he can really sing those songs."
In an era where rock music was getting progressively indulgent, the Faces epitomised the true spirit of rock 'n' roll for many music fans in the pre-punk era. Formed from the remains of the Small Faces after singer-guitarist Steve Marriott joined supergroup Humble Pie with guitar legend Peter Frampton, the remaining members formed the Faces with Wood and Stewart.
The band's riotous live shows featured an onstage bar and such iconic hits as 'Stay With Me,' 'Cindy Incidentally' and 'Pool Hall Richard.'
The band split up in 1975 with Wood joining the Rolling Stones and Stewart enjoying a hugely successful solo career. Ronnie Lane's post-Faces career was cut short when he contracted multiple sclerosis. He died in 1997.
Other acts performing the Vintage at Goodwood festival include Buzzcocks, Heaven 17, Sandie Shaw and Aswad.

Rod's voice is shot?" Obviously you have not seen him in concert in the past few years. Still sounds great. Puts on a 21/2 hour show without the attitude of younger performers. A troubador that still is greatful to have an audience (sold out shows mostly). I would rather pay to see these "old' rockers than any current primadona act. If you look at the history of any of these bands, they kept evolving trying new styles of music. Stewart a great example early years Blues 9english), Rock, soul and he keeps trying new things. I don't see any new groups or performers evolving or trying different venues for music.

I met him once at a mutual friends wedding he was a lovely guy.
Rod Stewart & the Faces used to be the "house band" at the Eastown Theater in Detroit, back in the early 1970's. They performed there every few weeks, (that's why we called the Faces the "Eastown House Band"). Alice Cooper got famous there and between the Eastown and the Grande Ballroom, Detroit was the best place to be if you like rock. David Bowie performed five nights in a row and J.Geils said Detroit was their favorite place to play. So sad now, Detoit is teenage wasteland.
The seventies was the best decade for rock! (in my humble opinion).....gregg in Sarasota, FL
Somebody accused me of being a kid earlier. I grew up with rock and roll - I even watched Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent at Hammersmith in 1958 when I was 14. That doesn't mean I'd go and see him today if he was still alive.
Every generation has its own music and that's how it should be. Try listening to some of it instead of wearing out your old 78s and your blue suede shoes.
happy to see these guys can get a paycheck without their old meal ticket

I was lucky enough to grow up when faces was huge. And listen to bands like Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin!! Yea todays music is hypocritical & telling our kids that it's ok to beat up women & use the "F" word like there's no tomorrow. That's not music!! That's just a bunch of noise!!

May 26 2010 at 1:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNOISE is right. Most of these bands are LOUD without substance and most of their lead singers could'nt carry a note in a bushel basket....

As I understand it, famously ousted by Rod Stewart, the talented but now reclusive Stevie was ultimately destroyed by a fire at his home.
May 26 2010 at 12:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySteve Mariott wasn't ousted by Rod Stewart, nobody could ever oust Mariott he was too charismatic and had "THAT VOICE". He left the Small Faces but he did steal Rod's girlfriend and marry her.
I think Stevie will be in heaven right now having a right laff at Hucknall in his old band. Even I can sing better than Hucknall!!!!
I am excited! I absolutely loved Small Faces and Faces. Small Faces were always my fav Mod band. I still listen to their music today. They were truly underrated and abused by the music industry. I think Steve Marriott was one of the greatest singers ever, RIP, and Mick is an awesome singer who can truly fill the bill. Please come to the U.S., I will be in the front row. Oh La La!
