It only took 19 years but Phil Lesh and Bob Weir -- both from the Grateful Dead -- will return to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco this August with their latest Dead incarnation, Furthur. Their headlining set will be a part of the third annual Outside Lands Music Festival, which also boasts Sunday night headliners Kings of Leon and anchor bands the Strokes, My Morning Jacket and Phoenix. Outside Lands takes place on Aug. 14 and 15 and will once again spotlight the best of the Bay Area in terms of wine, food, technology and, of course, music.Keeping in form with its previous two editions, Outside Lands will host everyone from icons and rock royalty (Al Green, Levon Helm) to emerging talent (Dawes, Beats Antique) and everything in between (Social Distortion, Gogol Bordello). Additional acts include Wolfmother, Bassnectar, Chromeo, Pretty Lights, the Temper Trap and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Also of note: Empire of the Sun, who have only played a handful of live dates ever, are on the bill. For the complete list, visit the festival's official website.
Outside Lands is held in the heart of Golden Gate Park, a setting familiar to Lesh and Weir from their days with the Grateful Dead -- the band used to play the park regularly in the late '60s and early '70s. The last time they performed there was in 1991 at a memorial tribute to Bill Graham. Their shows in the park and its adjoining Panhandle were legendary; they were free, they were freaky and they were places where people could freak freely. Two of those three elements will carry over to Outside Lands -- tickets go on sale Wednesday.
