Who here hasn't used a mixtape as a way to express their feelings towards someone? Thought so. Whether giving or getting, we all have fond memories of mixtapes. Of course, with all the ways to share music digitally these days, the actual physical mixtape -- an analog cassette complete with a homemade cover and a handwritten tracklist -- has become something of a lost art.Leave it to Tift Merritt to bring the romance of it all back. The narrator in her song 'Mixtape' uses one of those long-forgotten cassettes to make a message for her lover. For the video, which the singer-songwriter also directed, Merritt actually made the tape's artwork herself. "I made this little experiment on the floor of our apartment on a Friday afternoon, with a Negro Modelo and whatever art supplies I could find," Merritt tells Spinner.
As for the recipient of the song's tape, the secret love interest? Well, we can always dream, can't we? And for those of you who haven't gotten around to making your own special someone an actual mixtape of your own, you could always just send them the link to this video. After all, it's the thought that counts.
Check out the video below and then listen to a full stream of Merritt's new album, 'See You on the Moon,' on Spinner's Listening Party.
