Outkast's Andre 3000 Covers Beatles for Kobe Bryant Nike Ad
- Posted on Jun 4th 2010 11:00AM by John D. Luerssen
As fans continue await the follow-up to Outkast's 2006 movie soundtrack 'Idlewild,' Andre 3000 has finally returned to music, covering the Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' track 'All Together Now' for a new Nike commercial starring the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant. The action-packed ad, which has been airing during the NBA finals, is one of the singer/rapper's first official performances since he dropped in on John Legend's 2008 album 'Evolver,' appearing on the track, 'Green Light.'Outkast hasn't shaken it like a Polaroid picture in quite some time, but Andre 3000's musical re-emergence -- after an acting career that found him starring on the final season of 'The Shield' in 2008 and in the movie 'Semi-Pro' the same year -- is encouraging. In April, fellow Outkast member Big Boi told BBC Radio's Zane Lowe that an album was on the horizon, but added, "That's all top secret information now. We can't let people know what we're doing. You better know that something is brewing."
In the meantime, Big Boi's solo album -- reportedly due July 6 and titled 'Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty' -- will count Andre on two tracks. Big Boi referred to another track that Andre 3000 produced for the album as "crazy" and "bananas" when speaking to Lowe.

Now I'm getting really pissed off at these comments. Both white people saying black people's music suck (remember blues, remember early r&b and rock and roll? remember fuynk? it's black) and black people saying white's music suck (beatles, doors, stones, floyd, etc.).
Now, the Beatles were genius and there should not be any doubt about it. Michael Jackson was too a genius, though in another level in another time.
Now, can't you try and learn something about your idols' music? It's all bout love, people! Why can't you try and just get along? As they said in another comment, music is for all by all. It's a universal thing and it's wonderful, so stop it already and enjoy it while you can!
Now, about the cover. It's a cover, so it's a form of tribute. And it doesn't sound bad at all, Andre 3000's got his own style, so I don't know what some of you are complaining about.
If I were to complain about someone covering the Beatles, it would be the Jonas Brothers, Britney, or some other freak born out of a Record Label, with no musical knowledge or tangible talent whatsoever.
This is good. One musician paying tribute to another. Whether the music they make/made is similar or not, whether one's white and the other one's black (or purple, or green, for that matter), whether the listener himself is an asian little girl, a caucasian father, or a black grandmother, are all details which have zero relevance here.
Music is universal. Enjoy it and stop being such ignorant bitches!
POPA9CAP, YOU'RE AN IDIOT! MJ HAD TALENT BUT ELVIS WAS AND STILL IS THE KING!
ELVIS LIVES IN MY HEART FOREVER
yours, mine, ours? Music isn't a possesion its a part of our being. rap, soul, gospel, rock, blues what ever. in each of us music is part of who we are and its like water it seeks its own level in all.

But I really just wanted ta add my voice to the raging going on. Personally, for me, Outkast an' the Beatles are on the same plateau. An' anyone that would shun that idea got a preconceived notion of em cuz their considered a "rap group". I grew up listenin ta em. An I'm still listenin ta em; almost 15 years now. I dont know what I'll be listenin to 15 years from now... but I know I'll still be listenin ta OutKast.
'Kast ranks along with the best funk an' soul music of the final quarter of the 20th Century; their music an' their albums are spacy an' conceptual like Parliament or (DARE I SAY IT???) The Beatles (!!!) an' each one is an extension of the previous one ("hold up... slow up... stop... CONTROL").
Them two dudes are ARTISTS of the best nature; experimental, unconfined, passionate, talented. Hadda take over the reins of their own production from the super-smooth-funkiness that is Organized Noize jus ta prove it.
I'm jus sayin'... what do I know... When I list my 5 favorite artists OutKast an' the Beatles will both be in there. Somewhere alongside Junior Kimbrough, Charlie Parker an' Bob Dylan.
Recognize. Music is the universal connecter.
popa9cap is as racist as any white guy we've had to put up with in these comment sections. I'm white-56 years old and grew up with the Beatles music. Also with Motowns music. However I have to agree with a lot of other posters, that rap is less than music. Mostly it's just rhyming with a back beat, with a lot of profanity and gang references. If rap actually had a tune with some harmony I'd find it more appealing. Even better would be a rap group that could actually PLAY an instrument and/or sing. I'll take Stevie Wonder or the Temtations or the Supremes or Four Tops or Marvin Gaye....wait a minute, I have ALL of them on vinyl. And I have a turntable that's used to PLAY a record rather than RUIN one.

If you'd ever taken the time to LISTEN to Rap, you'd know about wise artists like Talib Kweli, Common, Mos DEF, (most of all)> Nas, Tupac, etc. Yes, Tupac was a rough one. But wise WAY beyond his years. A lyrical poet. As for artists playing their own instruments. You have ANDRE 3000, Pharrell Williams (also produces), Timbaland (also produces), etc. Research, and an open mind is aaaaaall you need. You just have to apply yourself. If you don't care to? Shut up, and stop trying to define what music ISN'T!
Rap music isn't successful for just being "rhymes on a back beat" (???). It's a form of expression that reaches much farther than alternative music, and death metal. That's because it's real life material. It's relative. Got it?
BTW, your name is QUITE befitting. LMFAO

It's not really a great song anyway, so it's hard to say its great. It definately better than Target's ads with Hello/Goodbye, and whatever company was using Help a few years ago.
The Beatles were totally influenced by African-American performers and have given them incredible respect over the years. Stevie Wonder did We Can Work it Out almost better than they did.
I don't really get the relevance of this particular song to Kobi. He's as selfish as the come. He's not together with anyone unless they are doing what he wants.
I love music and I've especially enjoyed seeing how performers are crossing and mixing genres. In all fairness to Andre 3000, if you never picked up the LOVE BELOW, then you should. You would learn he is more than just a rapper and actually has traditional musical training. I love to see artists paying tributes to the greats by covering their songs.
I would address all the ignorance about what is and isn't music, but I don't have the care or time. I say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but entitlement does not mean that you are right.
Ralph...I think it was very inappropriate to say that no black person born could do a beatles song. For one thing, I am not a fan of the Beatles but to say that a black person isn't good enough to do it is just plain wrong. Now I will say that I don't think that it should of been a rapper but they could of picked someone maybe who sings or something and it doesn't matter what race or culture they are. I don't think that every song has to be remade into a rap song. I also disagree with songs constantly from the past being done over. I feel like a classic is a classic and it should be left alone. There are always movies and songs being remade, its like people don't have the originality anymore to just create something of their own...But Ralph you are wrong to say that comment. There are many black people who have made tremendous contributions to music and it's not just rap, there's rock n roll. I mean there are many talented black artists like Chuck Berry, The temptations, motown artists, diana ross and the supremes, marvin gaye, jackie wilson, frankie lymon and a whole list more.

June 05 2010 at 4:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySounds more like singing than rapping. I thought it was fairly enjoyable.
June 04 2010 at 10:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWooooow, I'm a little disappointed by the racial tones here! I'm a fan of Andre 3000, and I feel he's a talented musician, but I wasn't thrilled about his rendition on this Beatles song. Btw, I'm a huuuuuuge Beatles fan, and I don't feel you have to be a certain race or age to enjoy an amazing band like the Beatles. Music is universal, and it's on eof the few things in this world that we all can relate to. People have their own preferences, so to each it's own. Great music is timeless, and people will gravitate to it no matter what! I'm black, was born in 79, and the music of the Beatles move me! Race is never a concern if I'm moved by music!
