Superchunk to Play First TV Gig in 16 Years
- Posted on Jun 4th 2010 12:30PM by Emily Tan
As previously reported, Superchunk singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan promised the band will be playing more live shows in support of their long-awaited new album, 'Majesty Shredding.' Aside from music festivals this summer and a few dates in September, the Chapel Hill, N.C.-based band has also announced that they will be performing on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' on Sept. 20, marking their first TV appearance since 1994. The show will come just days after Superchunk release 'Majesty Shredding,' their first full-length since 2001's 'Here's to Shutting Up,' on Sept. 14. On the new record, the veteran indie rockers collaborated with producer Scott Solter, who's worked with St. Vincent and John Vanderslice. The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle also provides backing vocals on some of the tracks.
In other Superchunk news, fans who want to keep up with the band's every move can now drop any of their stalker-ish plans and follow them on Twitter.

I've been using the internet since 1994 and can't believe aol still exists. There should be a big news piece on the merge records site about this. "AOL still threatening to sue Archers of Loaf for exclusive use of initials".
July 20 2010 at 8:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been in the recording business for 22 years and Superchunk is one of the reasons I'm in the recording business. This album is going to be fantastic.
July 19 2010 at 12:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI, too, have been in the record business for over 20 years. And I've done it all, too. Signed a few third tier Boy Bands, tour managed a couple vocal groups, sold T-shirts at corporate sponsored showcases, you name it. Not only have I never heard of these jokers.... I'm inclined to think this is some sort of elaborate prank. I mean, really. Superchunk???? That name has to be a gag!!! Someone tell me I ain't dreaming.
July 17 2010 at 6:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat's hilarious here is the fact that so much anger over "who is this band?" is compounded by the fact that this article is posted on AOL, where the average age of users is about 173.
You all know you can visit youtube directly without having a link, right?
Oh myyy goooodddd, indie rock is getting some presssss....EVERYBODY PANIC!
I had a club in Greensboro in the early 90's and they played there. Good group I think that I was able to pay them $17.00 for the gig that night. Slack Mother Fucker was a favorite song of mine.
Good times

I have spent twenty-two years in the record industry. I was at the premiere of Toy Story III! I've never heard of these punks. My buddy works on Entourage and I asked him too. Ditto. What is up?
July 16 2010 at 10:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyToy Story THREE, you say? Then you must be an expert. Kudos to your breadth of knowledge.
July 17 2010 at 5:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo hilarious to read all these people who are so upset, not because they've not heard of the band, but because they believe that their own musical knowledge defines what is and isn't newsworthy. Superchunk were a big band in the underground scene in the early 90s. They were probably influential to some bands you DO know. You can thank them for creating the the label that now handles Arcade Fire and Spoon. And if you haven't heard of them either just assume that they suck. Otherwise you'd know all about them right?
July 16 2010 at 9:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy would anyone get so upset over a piece about a band releasing an album? Go find something worth your anger.
July 16 2010 at 9:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe comments that begin with "I've been in the music business for X number of years..." and end with "... I've never heard of Superchunk" are laughably fake. Unless by "in the music business" you mean "played in a wedding band".
It's totally understandable (though regrettable) that younger music fans don't know about Superchunk, but to hear people bragging about being music experts and then willfully proclaiming their ignorance is absolutely hilarious. There's a reason why this article was written, and if you don't understand the importance of Superchunk releasing a new album and booking dates to support it, then the fault lies with you, not with Spinner. Reading these comments is like watching a child yell at a dictionary because it contains words it hasn't heard yet.
Well said Jon.
I'm mystified that so few people on here have heard of this band especially after the success of Merge records. Anyone saying they were just a Chapel Hill phenomenon is also wrong. I first saw Superchunk in Australia in 1992 and they have a large fan base out here.
I guess the people commenting here should go back to listening to their Nickelback records or something...
