Pixies Call Off Israel Concert Following Gaza Raid

The Pixies will not be performing a scheduled date in Tel Aviv this summer, AP reported Sunday. The band released an announcement through a publicist this weekend informing fans that "with great regret" it has decided not to make the trip to Israel. The concert was part of the band's sizable summer tour, which will soon take them to Italy, New Zealand, and back to the U.S. for more than a dozen dates.

News of the cancellation follows last week's raid by the Israeli military against an aid flotilla bound for Gaza, which killed nine pro-Palestine activists. However, the Pixies' publicist in Israel, Shuki Weiss, did not name the raid -- or anything else -- as the reason for the cancellation.

Despite the political unrest in the region, performers including Elton John and Rod Stewart still plan to play Israel this summer, according to AP.

Two weeks ago Elvis Costello canceled his plans to perform in the country. The British singer-songwriter took to his website to explain his reasons, citing what he described as the "intimidation" and "humiliation" of Palestinians by Israel.

Gil Scott-Heron also recently canceled an appearance in Tel Aviv after protesters interrupted one of his shows at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Israel is the only country to ever give land to the Palestinians for self-rule. The Ottomans didn't, they ruled the area in their empire. The British didn't, they also ruled the area in their empire. The Jordanians didn't, they kept the West Bank Palestinians in refugee camps instead of building a country for them in the West Bank. The Egyptians didn't, they kept Gaza Palestinians in refugee camps instead of building a country for them. Only Israel gave land to the Palestinians for autonomous self-rule, when we withdrew from Gaza in 2005. But the Palestinians in Gaza chose not to build a country and live peacefully, they chose terror instead, and the rest is unfortunate history.

Israel has forgotten its origins - it now behaves towards others as they treated in the last war. For this there can NEVER be any justification.NO matter how powerful you are you should leave arrogance behind and learn to live with and accomodate others. This goes for all religions not only Jews

Who gives a rat's behind if these liberal idiots cancel their concerts? Israel had every right to defend themselves against the Palestinians who are funded by Iran and Russia. They were pushing Israel's buttons and I just wish the U.S. had the ba lls to fight back when threatened as Israel did. Our administration thinks we can sweet talk them and be friendly and they will leave us alone. WRONG!

You know people need to learn history! The Jewish people have been living in Israel for over 5000 years. The so called Palestinian people have not. It was NOT their land in fact there has never been a government of people called Palestinian, they have no national language and didn't exist prior to 1967 when the entire Arab population that surrounds Israel began a war that they did not win. Tiny outnumbered Israel won the war that was started against them. Israel, once called Palestine by the Romans and the English has ALWAYS BEEN INHABITED BY THE JEWISH PEOPLE! They did not steal the land it was first given to them by God (read the bible) then taken away by the Romans and then GIVEN BACK TO THEM BY The Balfour Declaration of 1917. You people need to learn your history and stop picking sides based on propaganda!

Seems as if YOU are the one that needs educating. Abraham, father of the Jews, was from Ur a city in Ancient Babylon.....modern-day Iraq. He was instructed by God to 'settle' the Levant or modern day Palestine. At that time most of that land was known as Canaan inhabited largely by Philistines, Edomites, and Canaanites. Joshua fought the Battle of what? Jericho. Just because there was no Nation known as Palestinia doesn't mean that it can be usurped. There was NEVER a land called Native Americana either.....this doesn't in any way invalidate the claims of many American Indians. You should go back to school.
