The Drums Bring Claire Grogan to Stage for London Show

The Drums teamed up with Altered Images singer Claire Grogan last night during their headline show at London venue Heaven for a one off duet. The band, celebrating the release of their debut album on Monday, were playing to a sold-out crowd when they introduced Grogan to the stage. She then provided the female vocals on the bands 'Summertime!' EP track, 'Don't be a Jerk, Johnny.'
Grogan appeared in good spirits, dancing with the bands guitarists Jacob Graham and Adam Kessler before linking with singer Jonathan Pierce to sing the song arm in arm. Pierce seemed particularly overawed by what was happening, almost bursting into fits of laughter during various points of the song.
The band have never hidden their 1980s influences, claiming in a recent interview with Spinner that they are friends with icons of the decade such as Boy George and Debbie Harry and are currently working with Orange Juice's Edwyn Collins.

Leaving to rapturous applause Grogan, whose band Altered Images had a 1981 hit with 'Happy Birthday,' left the young New York band to play the likes of 'Best Friend' and 'Skippin' Town' from their self-titled debut.
After a breakneck 'Let's Go Surfing,' Pierce thanked the fans, saying "London, we would be nothing without you." The band then ended their set with an epic 'Down by the Water'.

As she played Susan in "Gregory's Girl," I have a soft spot for Claire Grogan, and it was a wonderful surprise to see her last night, dancing around and singing joyously, like a teenager, with Jonathan Pierce. The show was a classic, the crowd was up for it, singing along, and they filmed it, from two angles, so I suppose it will be a DVD or DVD extra, which is good, 'cos I'm certain others will be charmed by Jonny's and Claire's duet. :)
