Miike Snow Find Unexpected Home at Bonnaroo

Not only was Miike Snow the first "best-new-thing" band to really open things up on Night One of Bonnaroo, but the band also perfectly -- if unexpectedly -- captured the spirit of the festival itself by combining indie rock aesthetics, pop hooks and crafty songwriting with, yes, live jamming. It can be argued that Bonnaroo was built on bands that not only wrote great songs but that, live, were able to reinvent them. Miike Snow is that band. For their Bonnaroo set on opening night, they ran through much of their debut album -- including underground hits like 'Silvia' and 'Burial' -- as well as introducing new songs ('The Rabbit') to the flow. Likewise, a suitably jammed-out version of 'Animal' provided the first mobilizing moment of Bonanaroo 2010 -- and the crowd went wild. Welcome to the big leagues, fellas. By the way, which one's Miike?
Frontman Andrew Wyatt told Spinner, back at Coachella, that the band improvises the soundscapes that glue the songs together, building bridges from one tune to the other, just because they'd "be bored, otherwise." At Bonnaroo, not doing so would also bore the audience. Looks like Miike Snow has found a festival they can call home.
