If opening night at Bonnaroo is considered a "warm-up," a taste test of the music and debauchery to follow over the next 72 hours, then Neon Indian and the crowd at their Thursday night show certainly missed the memo. The group's opening night performance had the type of excitement and enthusiasm usually reserved for bands in the Fridayand Saturday time slots.
Early on, a plume of smoke hovered over the crowd, as singer Alan Palomo looked out into the sea of people and proclaimed that this was the "most amazing crowd" they had ever played for. And as such, the group delivered on every level.
A rush of red, blue, green and purple lights flooded the surrounding area as they played hits from their debut record, 'Psychic Chasms.' '6669 (I Don't Know if You Know),' 'Terminally Chill' and crowd favorite 'Should Have Taken Acid With You' were just a few of the many highlights of the band's 45-minute set. It was a perfect way to open the first night of the festival: with the Ferris wheel covered in neon lights in the foreground and Neon Indian's spacey synths and sequencers filling the night sky.
