Japandroids Brave an Early Sunday Set at Bonnaroo
- Posted on Jun 13th 2010 1:30PM by Alex Suskind
The 12:30PM timeslot on Sunday at Bonnaroo can be hell for both fan and artist. For festivalgoers, it is the beginning of the end -- the last leg of the trip, when your feet and back could give out at any moment. For musicians, you risk playing to a smaller crowd due to performing the day after the craziest night of the festival. So when Japandroids lead singer Brian King stepped out on stage, he seemed pleasantly surprised. "We seriously thought we were going to be playing to five people this early, so thank you for coming out," he said.
Made up of King and drummer David Browse, the punk garage rock duo from Canada gave the crowd an energetic performance of tracks from their debut album 'Post-Nothing.' Fans were also treated to a song the band had yet to play in America, a new single called 'Younger Us.'
Although Japandroids' set wasn't as packed as other shows this weekend, the crowd that came by were appreciative of the perfomance, particularly when King began handing out bottles of cold water. The band clearly sympathized with those who had waited out in the heat to watch them play. "We are from Canada," King said, "so this is killing us."
