Silversun Pickups Finally Launch Headlining Tour for 'Swoon'

Los Angeles and New York have always had a bit of a rivalry -- east coast/west coast, Hollywood versus Wall Street, etc. And now, one of Los Angeles' hottest musical exports, Silversun Pickups, are taking some New York heat. "New York gets so pissed at us," frontman Brian Aubert tells Spinner. "We get messages and things from New York like, 'You guys are d---s!'" So, what's up with the messages? Well, it turns out Silversun Pickups are a victim of their own success. After their stellar second album, 'Swoon,' debuted at No. 7 upon its release in April of 2009, the band was presented with so many offers they couldn't refuse that they didn't get a chance to properly tour. "We haven't done some major areas yet. We were planning on doing it, but so much stuff came up," Aubert says. "Muse came up and there were a lot of opportunities we couldn't pass up." The band has been to New York, but only for "an acoustic show at a tiny little place" and as the opening act for Muse, an experience Aubert calls "amazing."
But Aubert has good news for New York, Boston, Chicago and any other place else that's been feeling neglected by the band. "We are finally doing our headlining tour of the States with Against Me! and our friends, Henry Clay People," he says.
Unfortunately, this means it's going to be a while for new music from the band, as Silversun Pickups are not ones to write on the road. "You can't make a record while you're touring," he says. Of course, with Pro Tools and a lot of technology being so portable now, there are a lot of bands that do write in the bus, but SSPU don't want to do a road album. "We're not influenced by those things. It's exciting and fun and it's an amazing circus, but it's not inspirational," Aubert says while drummer Christopher Guanlao jokingly sings, "My hotel room has nice sheets."
Aubert promises the time between records is better for all involved. "Be careful what you wish for -- people always want a record from us quickly," he says. "We can give it to them, but it'll suck."
