Devo, 'Devo Makes Something for Everybody' (Part I) -- Exclusive Video
- Posted on Jun 15th 2010 11:00AM by Dan Reilly
The making of 'Something for Everybody,' Devo's first studio album in 20 years, has been a long road for the New Wave rockers. They've returned to their old label, Warner Brothers, performed at the Olympics and started a marketing company called Devo, Inc., which carried out a "song study" focus group to determine which songs would make the album and the new color of the band's famous energy dome hats (blue ultimately won out). Now Devo have released the first in a five-part web "reality" series that documents the making of the album, a few live performances, their flirtation with corporate marketing culture and, of course, the ongoing de-evolution of the world. The first episode chronicles the eight weeks leading up to the band's recent Coachella set, where they "triumphantly" wore their "Everybody Face masks," a product that didn't go over so well with their label and advertising consultants. Check out the video after the jump and listen to the full album stream of 'Something for Everybody' at Spinner's Listening Party.

Watched Devo on SNL doing 'Jocko Homo' and 'Satisfaction' and said to myself, 'self, this is android rock.' I liked their early stuff better, as it was more guitar oriented, as opposed to synth-oriented. It's great to see them put something new out, and even better (what clips I've heard so far), they sound stronger, wiser and (dare I say it?) more mature. As Kraftwerk said so long ago, 'we are the robots.'

The entire of purpose of this band was to operate outside of the "sphere". I mean they stand for "De-evolution" and the higher ups at Warner Brothers wants to make them mainstream? My favorite T'shirt that I wear around is "Keep Austin Weird" (that is Austin, Tx.). I hope they keep "DEVO WEIRD". "Whip It Guys, Just Whip It Good!!" Love ya...
June 15 2010 at 2:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was a Devo fan before they were ever 'big". Remember them on Mirv Griffin anyone? Awsome. Looking forward to a tour so I can bring my 11 year old daughter and reprogram her from the modern music she likes. The first 4 albums are my favorites and bring back such great memories, pogoing around the basement with friends in 1980, back when pot was $20 a 1/2 oz., oh the memories or mammaries as Wren would say........
June 15 2010 at 1:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhen my uncle used to wax nostalgic about the 'good old days' of punk he told me once about how he took a square friend to see DEVO and said the guy left the show convinced that the band was created by Soviet scientists in their attempt to create a perfect rock-and-roll experience. Search "Uncontrollable Urge" on Youtube, and see for yourself. He might have been on to something.
June 15 2010 at 1:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFirst time I saw DEVO was their performance on SNL, I believe they did Jocko Homo and (I can't get no) Satisfaction. I saw them live in Central Park at the Schaefer Music Festival in '79 or'80, which was one of the best produced and staged concerts I've ever seen. And DEVO was absolutely flawless-I saw them a bit after that at Danceteria, which was a much smaller setting-they weren't able to mount the giant stage production, but they still kicked arse!! Played for for well over 2 hrs., called back for encore after encore...DEVO is STILL ahead of the times. Brilliant.

DEVO is the band for our times even more than they were then.
Glad to hear they're still around! I occassionally hear their tracks on movies - and commercials? Great.
