A British Sea Power-led project has joined the ever-increasing ranks of bands who have recorded a World Cup song for the England football team. Featuring BSP guitarist Martin Noble, the five-piece have released 'Football (Kick it in the Goal)' as a free download via British Sea Power's website.Called the Bench Warmers, the band includes former BSP drum-thumper Eamon Hamilton and his Brakes' bandmate Marc Beatty alongside "leading UK Jonathan Richman tribute act" the Modern Ovens' Darren Moon and Matt Eaton.
'Football (Kick it in the Goal)' is described on the band's website as being "inspired by a stirring calypso tribute to an airport." According to the NME, the musical inspiration in question was written to commemorate the opening of Grenada's Maurice Bishop International Airport.
The Bench Warmers join a host of bands and acts to record unofficial England World Cup anthems. James Corden and Dizzee Rascal are currently leading the way and look set to retain their position at the top of the singles chart with charity single 'Shout for England.'
