Golden Dogs Making a 'Home' Movie to Support New Album

The Golden Dogs' long-awaited third album, 'Coat of Arms,' won't be out until July 27th, but already the Toronto-based rockers are looking to mythologize the space where it was created. "I guess we're making a film," lead singer and guitarist Dave Azzolini tells Spinner. "We're looking into filming the entire album start-to-finish live, sort of two mics recording everything and a bunch of fish-eye lenses hopefully."
The plan, he explains, is to have the band set up in the house that he and wife/keyboardist Jessica Grassia share and capture the whole thing on film. "This album was written in the place that we've been living in for the past two and a half years," he says. "I think every album is directly related to the place it was made in to us.
"Even in the album art for the second album [2006's Big Eye Little Eye], we had our basement, which was very much a dingy basement," Azzolini says. "We kind of brightened it up with yellow and tried to make it a bit more welcoming. The place looms large in the content of these albums."
Rather than going to the trouble and expense of pressing up a proper DVD, the band plan on making the clips available online. "I don't think we're gonna take it that seriously," he says. "Everything else has taken too long. That's why we're thinking two mics, lo-fi and getting our buddies with a couple handhelds and trying to make the best of a cheap situation."
The band hopes to have the footage available to coincide with the late-July release of 'Coat of Arms.' "Whether we can pull it all together in time is another question," Azzolini concedes, "but I'm pretty sure we can."
The Golden Dogs play at the El Mocambo on Fri. June 18 as part of NXNE.
