Have you ever wondered just what it is that bands and artists do when they disappear into that strange hinterland called real life that appears between albums and tours? Speaking to AOL Music UK, Macy Gray has revealed that she gets together with members of Velvet Revolver to play in an L.A.-based covers band called Camp Freddy."They're pretty popular in L.A. playing at a lot if parties and openings and stuff but I don't do it all the time," says the singer. "We do the Pretenders' 'Brass in Pocket,' 'Rapture' by Blondie -- and I've been singing that song since I was kid -- and we also do White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army.' That one I really like but everyone likes 'Rapture' because you don't hear that one so much no more."
The band was put together by Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum and he, bassist Duff McKagan and guitarist Slash, all appear on Macy's new album, 'The Sellout,' performing the track 'Kissed it.'
Despite their social get togethers, Macy confirms that she's been chasing Slash's guitar talents for some time, but has only just managed to pin him down now.
"I've known Slash for years and Duff McKagan lives round the corner from him. His daughter and my daughter are like best friends," she explains. "Every record that I've done, Slash has turned me down; he's always busting my ego but this time he called me back in five minutes and said that he'd love to do it. He turned up a week later and I feel good about that. I've got Slash -- finally!"
