Mike Love Quashes Rumours of Beach Boys Reunion With Brian Wilson
- Posted on Jun 23rd 2010 7:30AM by Barnaby Smith
Mike Love of the Beach Boys has moved swiftly to dampen rumours of a reunion with Brian Wilson. As previously reported by Spinner, Love made comments in the Las Vegas Sun suggesting that Brian Wilson may rejoin his old band to mark the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys' formation in 1960, but now it seems such a collaboration is not on the cards.A statement made by Love on the Beach Boys official website reads, "The Beach Boys continue to tour approximately 150 shows a year in multiple countries. At this time there are no plans for my cousin Brian to rejoin the tour. He has new solo projects on the horizon and I wish him love and success. We have had some discussions of writing and possibly recording together, but nothing has been planned. I, as I'm sure he is, am proud and honored that the Beach Boys music has endured these 50 years, but felt the need to clarify that there are no current 'reunion' tour plans."
Given the tumultuous relationship Love and Wilson have endured in the past, perhaps Love wishing his cousin "love and success" is a reconciliation of sorts.
Meanwhile, the Beach Boys are in the midst of a European tour and play at the Belfast Waterfront this Friday, June 25.

The sad fact is that the whole "Beach Boys" schtick was concocted by their lunatic, emotionally and physically abusing, controlling father, Murray Wilson, who was eventually fired by Brian Wilson. Brian had finally had enough when Murray started forging Brian's name onto contracts. When Murray died, none of the surviving Beach Boys came to the funeral, and he was buried in an unmarked grave.
As was described above, they started out as the Pendletones, a play on Pendleton shirts, which were very "in" at that time. In short, they were just a bunch of pimple faced, crooning garage band kids in San Diego that nobody had ever heard of.
Murray thought they would get more work if they marketed more to the beach/surfing scene that was then becoming popular in San Diego, so he changed their name to "The Beach Boys" and forced them to singing songs about surfing.
That's it. That's where the entire "beach" and "surfing" Beach Boys theme came from; it was all a hoax, just another ego trip dreamed up by Murray. None of them, except for Dennis, had even a remote interest in the beach scene or surfing, or even knew how to swim, and Brian was reportedly even afraid to go in the water.
Still, some of their music was golden, especially their early harmony pieces like Warmth of the Sun, Surfer Girl, etc. It was extremely unique. When the bell-voiced Carl Wilson died, and they brought in Bruce Johnston, went "psychedelic" and started trying to sound like another Beatles copycat group (e.g. "God Only Knows"), I stopped listening to them. Sad.
indeed, the beach boys! the number 1 group, band, combo, in american history. still love their music, still love their songs, still love the days, still love the memories!! help me rhonda!!

It is best to remember their music as it was.

After all this time maybe it is time to just let some of the old bands go. I am a Baby Boomer and we are the generation that swore to never get old...but...maybe it is time to let the Beach Boys go...we have their remastered music...and thier re-remastered music. Just look at the damage The Who did to their remembered images at this past SuperBowl...that was awful. I would love to go back to 1964 but I can't.

June 23 2010 at 1:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere will never be a Beach Boys reunion as long as Carl and Dennis stay dead.
June 23 2010 at 1:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've seen the Beach Boys three times over the couse of 40 years and their most recent shows are every bit as good as the show I saw back in the 60's. I attended their fourth of July concert here in Harrisburg a few years ago and Mike Love called my daughter up on stage. It was an experience neither of us will forget. My Daughter said Mike was freindly and gracious though the entire evening. If they come back this way again, I will definately go to see them a fourth time!
