The Flaming Lips Get Political at Glastonbury

George W. Bush may well have been out of office for 18 months, but the Flaming Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne used the band's Glastonbury set to blast the former Commander-in-Chief and hail his replacement Barack Obama as a "true rock 'n' roll president."Introducing the 'Yeah Yeah Song,' Coyne attacked the Bush administration's foreign policy, while urging the audience to give the peace sign with everyone they could.
That is one of the Flaming Lips' strengths. Few bands can blend politics, metaphysics and existentialism into such a heady psychedelic cocktail.
The Pink Floyd-styled stage set -- complete with lasers, streamers, video projections and dancing fans in animal costumes -- helped the band's acid-fried world view go down most agreeably, especially on the communal singalong 'Do You Realize,' which led to spontaneous outbursts of emotion. Yes, happiness really can make you cry.
