Steve Mason Returns to Glastonbury After Wilderness Years
- Posted on Jun 26th 2010 1:00PM by Julian Marszalek
The success or failure of a band at Glastonbury is largely dependent on their ability to seize the moment. The greats get defined by the time and the place and pass into the festival hall of fame. Just ask Pulp, Radiohead and P.J. Harvey. With the overhead sun beating down relentlessly from a cloudless blue sky, Steve Mason's rolling basslines, shuffling beats and velvet-smooth voice coalesced into an irresistible lolloping groove.
'Lost and Found' saw Mason finding the mood for the rest of the set to follow, with 'Boys Outside' being a particular highlight. But it was when he exhumed the songs from his old alma mater the Beta Band, such as 'Dr Baker,' that the Park Stage saw the biggest cheers of the set.
Mason's happiness to delve back into his old band's back catalogue ensured he didn't just seize the moment, he hugged it and kissed it as well.
