The Black Keys Honour John Peel During Glastonbury Show
- Posted on Jun 26th 2010 1:30PM by Julian Marszalek
While Jack White has stretched himself to a point where he can twang a b sharp major on his leg, Ohio's purveyors of drums-and-guitar blues the Black Keys have consolidated their skills to the point where they played one of the stand-out sets on the John Peel Stage on Glastonbury 2010's first full day of music.Singer Dan Auerbach didn't miss the opportunity to pay tribute to iconic broadcaster Peel, who died in 2004 after decades of broadcasting on BBC Radio 1. "We never had anybody like John Peel in the States," said Auerbach. "You people are really lucky."
Peel's patronage of the Black Keys was shrewdly judged, and the band proved to be a perfect choice for a swelteringly hot Glastonbury. '10AM Automatic' summoned the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, with Auerbach showing his developing skills as a vocalist.
The Black Keys still managed to exude a blue-eyed soul amid the grit and texture -- qualities that are often in short supply at Glastonbury.
