Empire of the Sun Fall Flat at Glastonbury
- Posted on Jun 28th 2010 9:00AM by Julian Marszalek
Park Stage headliners Empire of the Sun conclusively proved that no matter how daring and sumptuous a stage set is, there really is no substitute for a decent tune. For 45 minutes or so, the Australian pop concept struggled to find one during their Glastonbury set.Perhaps it was the sense of expectation, but Empire of the Sun failed to turn the audience into the party monster they were hoping for. With a stage set resembling a hi-tech version of Montezuma's palace -- with dancers to match -- frontman Luke Steele neglected the songcraft and left little more than a band sounding like Goldfrapp but without the big ideas or a remote hint of sexiness.
A shame, as Empire of the Sun ended up becoming the one true disappointment of the festival. If they had spent as much time on their music as they had on their visuals and production, they could really rule the world. Instead, they failed even to keep a field happy.

I wasn't at the show however I could see why
This persone thought that. This bands music is terrible.
if you give me 15 minutes and fruity loops I can make
the same repetitive, non-progressive, simplistic,
and lackluster melodies/beats. However, their
Videos are amazing and I'm sure the visual aspect of the show
was awesome. I'm not going to ultra fest because these
uninspired musicians are headliners. Weak. The band empire
of the sun sucks a$$!
I don't normally post comments but felt compelled to after reading this rubbish.
For me, EoTS were fantastic - definately one of the higlights of the festival! They put on an amazing performance with awesome music and some brilliant visuals. I watched the show with a few friends including one who didn't know the band, and they all came away saying what a good performance it was.
We were standing just in front of the mixing desks and judging by the crowd's reaction in front of us, everyone else thoroughly enjoyed it as well!
A rather poor review all in all!
I think you're wrong! By and far the best performance of the weekend!

Did you actually watch any of it - I got back to see all my mates after seeing this who were raving about Stevie, really gutted that missed that show, but could not stop going on all the next day about how great EOTS were. So much so that most of my mates are now going to Lovebox in a couple of weeks to see them...

June 29 2010 at 3:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI totally agree with the other reviewers! EOTS were an absolute highlight of the Festival. Not only was the music sensational but it was a visual feast...they went from strength to strength lifting the crowd and closing with Walking on a Dream - pure perfection! I thought Gorrilaz could take a leaf...are you sure this review wasn't about them?!?

Ive been telling people that i thought they were one of the absolute highlights of the festival. We were near the stage and the sound was superb. Everyone was having a wonderful time.
This review quite frankly p1sses me off.
Very confused by this review - i was also covering as a reporter and thought it was the best received performance on the park all weekend (after thom yorke of course).
crowd reaction was very strong and the show itself was a genuine surprise - Luke Steele showed EoTS are much more than just a throwaway pop act. The show could easily have been at home on one of the bigger stages and the band's popularity was obvious from the numbers flooding over from the Other and Pyramid stages to catch the end of it.
I hate to criticise a reviewer as it is ultimately a personal judgement, but this piece is way off the mark.
Myself and another 6 music journalist were at this gig and both agreed it was one of the most unique and creative performances at Glastonbury this year.
Luke Steel gave a masterful performance and showed how incredibly adaptable he is on stage.
We looked at the crowd behind us, and it was going off. I'm not sure if the author of this web piece did some extra research and spoke to any of the crowd, we did and the response was full of praise.
I actually don't think that the person who wrote this rubbish excuse for a review has even listened to the album. They pretty much played all songs off the album plus a couple of new ones. It was an outstanding show, and everyone there could not stop raving how brilliant it was after it had finished.
Off the mark reviews like this disappoint me as a band who put so much effort into producing such a fantastic live show should get the recognition they deserve.
