Beck has always kept fans guessing, but the details of his latest Record Club release should still raise a few eyebrows. This time out, he's tackled 'Live at the Acropolis,' the 1994 commercial breakthrough by contemporary instrumentalist Yanni.Teaming up with Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and members of eclectic Chicago ensemble Tortoise, Beck tracked his interpretation of Yanni's concert performance -- originally recorded at the Acropolis in Athens -- at Hollywood's Sunset Sound Studios on June 13. According to Beck's official website, he and Moore "provided auxiliary music and noise, with Thurston improvising lyrics over the previously instrumental track 'Santorini.'"
"The new lyrics give the track an added urgency and pathos," the post explains of 'Santorini,' which is the first free download released through the latest Record Club installment. Thanks to Moore, the tune boasts impromptu lines like "Burn it up baby/I got a brand new pack of matches/I'm ready to set fire to this crazy city!"
Beck plans to release the songs sequentially, dropping one every week for the remainder of the summer. Since it got underway a year ago, Beck's Record Club has tackled 'The Velvet Underground & Nico,' Skip Spence's 'Oar' and, most recently, INXS' 1987 pop classic 'Kick.'
