The digital station is facing the threat of closure after a strategic review by the BBC recommended that a series of savage cuts to help bring down the corporation's expenditure. However, reports on Thursday, July 1, suggested a reprieve was on the cards, with one unnamed DJ claiming, "The optimism is growing. There is a feeling that they will not just kill us straight off."
According to Cocker, this all may just be a cunning ruse. Speaking at the AIM (Association of Independent Music) annual general meeting, he said, "I don't want the vehemence or size of the protest against the closure to be a handicap. They may just want to stall."
He added it would be a "dirty trick to just prolong the decision and hope another issue comes up and everyone forgets about it. People work there every day of the week, and it's not fair to have the Sword of Damocles hanging over their head."
