Fang Island Have a 'Dream Come True' on Flaming Lips Tour

Like so many notable bands before them, Fang Island began as an art school project. More specifically, the band formed at the Rhode Island School of Design -- the same institution that provided a breeding ground for the Talking Heads (and Les Savy Fav and, to some extent, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and so on and so forth). But this weekend Fang Island will graduate with honors, in a manner of speaking, when they hit the road with art experiment veterans, the Flaming Lips."I have never seen them live, but definitely always wanted to," guitarist Chris Georges tells Spinner. "I can't wait to see it." He's not bluffing either -- Georges rattled off to us, unprompted, his very own Lips highlight reel: "'Fearless Freaks' is one of my favorite rock documentaries. It's got everything -- intense drama, feel-good positivity and an incredible history. 'Soft Bulletin' is a masterpiece, but I really dig their early psychedelic rock like on 'Oh My Gawd...' and the 'Finally, the Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid' compilation. 'Transmissions From the Satellite Heart' is great. Their whole discography is overwhelmingly good and adventurous."
Luckily for Georges, not only will he get to see the Flaming Lips for the first time on Sunday, he'll get to see them multiple times in the weeks that follow -- Fang Island are the Flaming Lips' special guests for July. "It's a dream come true," says Georges. We should warn him to watch out for giant space bubbles, confetti rockets and throngs of dancing Santa Clauses and aliens but, you know...some things you just have to find out for yourself.
