Sir Tom Jones Lambasted by Own Label Boss
- Posted on Jul 5th 2010 6:30AM by Julian Marszalek
While Sir Tom Jones' forthcoming album, 'Praise and Blame,' is picking up critical garlands, it seems that a senior executive of his record label fails to see what the fuss is. A leaked e-mail has allegedly revealed that David Sharpe, vice-president of Island Records, considers the album -- a collection of gospel, blues and country songs produced by Kings of Leon knob-twiddler Ethan Johns -- to be "a sick joke."The Daily Telegraph reports that Mr Sharpe sent the e-mail on May 19 after he mistook the album as something lined up for the Christmas market. He wrote, "Imagine my surprise when I walked into the office this morning to hear hymns coming from your office -- it could have been Sunday morning."
He continued, "My initial pleasure came to an abrupt halt when I realised that Tom Jones was singing the hymns! I have just listened to the album in its entirety and want to know if this is some sick joke????"
Mr Sharpe's opinions may well find him in a minority. Mojo has given 'Praise and Blame' a four-star review saying, "Few singers with a popular background are to emerge with an album as remarkable as this in 2010" while a live review by Spinner praised Jones' musical shift as it enthused, "a change in musical direction can never come too late in a singer's career."

I thought that the tracks I've heard on Tom Jones latest album are brilliant. He's done a Johnny Cash and produced a great album as he's got older. The track What Good Am I - is just real and authentic, no crap just an old man singing with feeling. It'll be a classic.
Rock on Tom.
First of all why all the hatred out there? There is no time factor when it comes to music. Frank Sinatra sang right up to his last moments and we all should pay attention to older artists because that's where the younger musicians got their ideas to start with. If you feel they don't suit your taste that's fine, but to say someone should hang it up is ridiculous. So by that way of thinking all the great rock, blues and country legends should just stop performing and not give their fans a nostalgic moment, please. How typical of small-minded people to think it's their opinion only that matters. Should the great opera singers have retired? Should B.B. King pack it in and deprive the "real" blues enthusiasts of seeing a "living legend". I think you know the answer. And if Tom Jones wants to mellow and sing some Gospel and Blues, I say right on and my advice to his detractors is "back Off" and let the world go round because one day you'll get a little older and long to hear the music of your youth. P.S There is an old saying in the music world, "If you don't like what you're hearing, change the station."

July 05 2010 at 4:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoes it really matter whatever the album sound,. tom has been around for a longggggg time so there must be many a person that supports him. Although i have to admit he has never appealed to me, And just by the sheer fact we are all posting on here ensures he gets the coveridge he needs to re-boost his career
July 05 2010 at 4:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhe doesn't need to re-boost anything he sells out at concerts and his cd's do very well he is known world wide and does what he loves doing, this bit on here isn't by Tom its someone within the company who makes the records,he just goes in and does his job then leaves he has no part with that and as for a stunt as others were saying why would he need too do that??he has been going for 50 years the clue is in the answer just how many will be around that long now lets see maybe 0000.1% might be if they are lucky
July 05 2010 at 10:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFreedom of choice; very important in this day and age when a certain group is trying to end such freedoms. Tom Jones is still keeping busy doing what he loves, how many of us can say that.
