Chicago may be known as the Second City, but it's becoming the king of summer music festivals. In addition to July's Pitchfork Music Festival and August's Lollapalooza, September will see the inaugural North Coast Music Festival, a three-day event over Labor Day Weekend that's heavy on hip-hop, electronica and jam bands. With Wednesday's addition of Lupe Fiasco -- and Jay Electronica, De la Soul and Nas and Damian Marley already on the bill -- North Coast is undoubtedly hip-hop friendly. The experimental deep bass beats of Flying Lotus and Germany's 21st century rave-master Boys Noize segue the fest into its heavy electronica contingent, which includes Moby, the Chemical Brothers, Paul Van Dyke, Holy Ghost! and college after-party favorite Pretty Lights. The latter band channels the same granola-techno of headliners the Disco Biscuits, the New Deal and Future Rock.
Of the more guitar-friendly alt-rock acts enlisted for the small fest are Jakob Dylan and Three Legs, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and fellow Chicagoans Umphrey's McGee. Other acts adding to the fun include budding soulman Mayer Hawthorne, UK neo-jazz act New Mastersounds, dubstep fave Benga and famed house DJ Green Velvet. For the full lineup, head over to the festival's official website.
The North Coast Music Festival runs Sept. 3-5 at Chicago's Union Park. Tickets are available at $75 for a three-day pass or $35 for a single day.
