George Galloway Writes Dusty Springfield Musical
- Posted on Jul 9th 2010 6:30AM by Julian Marszalek
Firebrand former politician George Galloway -- best known for his anti-war campaigning, the formation of the Respect political party and a somewhat embarrassing turn in 'Celebrity Big Brother' -- has put the politics to one side as he pens a musical based on the life of the legendary singer Dusty Springfield who died in 1999.Writing on his blog for the Daily Record, the ever-controversial Galloway said, "The star who shines brighter than all the rest on this trip down memory lane is Dusty Springfield -- as fresh today as a spring field should be. And, as it happens, one of the many projects on which I'm working -- with Scots writer Ron McKay -- is a stage musical, eponymously entitled 'Dusty.'"
The move into musical theatre is in stark contrast to Galloway's often controversial career. It has seen him attempt to break the Israeli embargo against Gaza, campaign against the invasion of Iraq as well as taking on the US Senate whilst blasting America's foreign policy in his inimitable style.
According to Galloway, the musical will tackle Springfield's her battles against drug and alcohol addiction as well being a lesbian in less enlightened times. "It will not be just about her musical talent but her whole journey through life, her sexuality. It won't shirk from any of that," he said.

There has already been a Dusty Musical/Stage show, simply called "Dusty". Saw it at our local theatre years ago and it was great.
Plus whatever happened to the movie that was going to start 2 years ago about Dusty, by the same guys who wrote "Ray" etc.
I hardly think that Broadway was Galloway's aim in writing this musical. That's as unlikely as you actually ever being a Broadway producer. Sounds like the ramblings of a blinkered, right wing stereotype flag waving Yank.
80% of Broadway's audience is Jewish? Hilarious.
Downer of a story? That's right... people are only interested in Disney-lite fiction aren't they. Duh.
And only senior citizens have heard of Dusty? I think you'll find there's been a massive rise in interest in her since singers like Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith et al have become so popular.
Now go play your show tunes and finish your G Dubya jigsaw.

Did Galloway say he was writing this musical for Broadway? Sorry, I must have missed that bit.

No one cares about (non-legendary) Dusty Springfield, it's a downer of a story, and only people over 50 (maybe 60) know of her. Add to that that he is against Israel's embargo of Gaza and the 80% of Broaway audiences who are Jewish won't go see it once they hear of his anti -Israeli leanings. Besides, writing a script is one thing; I don't read any mention if there is a composer/lyricist or director attached to it. Probably not. This is a no-news item.
