Morcheeba Obsess Over 'Blood Like Lemonade' Album
Morcheeba have released four albums since 1998's 'Big Calm,' but band co-founder Paul Godfrey believes the group's upcoming record, 'Blood Like Lemonade' should have been the album they made instead. "['Blood Like Lemonade'] just felt like the natural succession to 'Big Calm' in the way it was written and produced -- and the way the three of us collaborated together on the material," Godfrey tells Spinner. "After the success of our second record, we were nervously exhausted; we had very fragile egos and we rubbed each other the wrong way. It just felt very natural to me if we had our wits about it in the year 2000, then we would have probably made this record."
However this London trip-hop trio went through a number of issues over the course of their career, namely the departure of vocalist Skye Edwards in 2003. While Godfrey and his brother Ross moved on and made two more albums without Edwards, the three announced their reunion in February and the making of 'Blood Like Lemonade.'
Although Edwards has joined forces with the Godfrey brothers once again, the trio actually didn't record 'Blood Like Lemonade' in the same place. "We actually didn't work in the studio together," he reveals. "Skye has a very young child so it was best for her to stay at home, so we just sent some equipment and let her do the vocals at home."
With years of experience, Paul feels the band is just "better" and has definitely learned from past mistakes.
"It's great and really amazing," he says. "It's great to have the wisdom that comes with all the little hindsight from all the mistakes we made. But at the same time, I kind of miss that youthful arrogance that would just get me through any situation."
Like many artists, Paul loves all the songs on the new album and calls it a "great experience that I obsessed over." However, 'Crimson' does strike a nerve with him. "I really like 'Crimson' because it's really simple and very raw, and I'm very happy with the sound of that."
Pleased with the new album and Morcheeba's reunion, Godfrey wants fans to see how far the band has come and enjoy the music as much as he does.
"I hope that they appreciate that we made a record for the good of the band," he says. It was good that we put our differences aside and that we made a great body of work for the listeners, really. We don't really make money out of the records so it's really a labor of love. I'm very happy with the material, and I hope it resonates with the fans."
Morcheeba are currently touring Europe and will also play shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco at the end of July. 'Blood Like Lemonade' is out now digitally, and hard copies release on July 13.
