Terry Gilliam to Direct Arcade Fire YouTube Webcast

Arcade Fire's YouTube webcast from Madison Square Garden will be directed by Terry Gilliam.

As previously reported on Spinner, rumours had been flying that a "well-known luminary" -- thought to be Spike Jonze -- would take the director's seat for their New York gig but the job has landed with Gilliam.

The director, who has overseen such films as '12 Monkeys' and 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus' -- as well as being a member of UK comedy collective Monty Python -- will turn his hand to directing the gig on Aug. 5, reports the Associated Press.

Rumours that Spike Jonze may have been given the role started after a trailer for the webcast was presumed to have been directed by the maverick visionary, who has enjoyed a profitable stint in music video making directing the likes of Weezer and the Beastie Boys.

The show will mark the launch of 'Unstaged,' a collaboration between YouTube and American Express, and is the first of five scheduled live performances to be streamed on YouTube. The only other planned broadcast announced so far is of John Legend and the Roots.

Arcade Fire took time earlier this month to pledge approximately $1 million Canadian ($970,200 US, £627,400) to the Haiti relief fund, with the band promising to match donations made by their fans.
