As previously reported in Spinner, in excess of 500 festival goers were injured on Saturday, July 23 in Duisburg, when fans leaving the Love Parade and those trying to gain access got trapped in a tunnel serving as the only point of entrance and exit. The ensuing stampede to escape the crush and the subsequent fatalities have led organisers of the techno festival to bring an end to the event.
According to the NME, local police have claimed they advised organisers to move the festival -- which they estimate attracted in the region of 1.4 million fans -- to a more suitable site. Currently investigators are examining the festival's security plans, which could in turn lead to negligent homicide charges.
A book of condolence has been opened while a remembrance service for the victims is in the process of being organised.
