We're constantly getting turned on to new music here at Spinner HQ. Between our Free MP3 of the Day and weekly Free CD Listening Party, we hope you are too. To help further the cause, we're gonna bring you our personal must-hear music picks with Listen Up! -- Spinner's weekly spotlight on staff-approved artists who rock our world.
Who: Disappears
Hail From: Chicago
Why We Love Them: Layers of fuzz and swirling guitars recall Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine, but the band's penchant for tense repetition and frontman Brian Chase's echoey, from-the-basement shouts lend them a darkness that's all their own.
Essential Listening: 'Gone Completely' (MP3 Download)
[Get Winamp] [Download Help]
Exclusive Q&A With Frontman Brian Case:
What's your favorite album right now?
David Bowie's 'Station to Station' or Bauhaus' 'In the Flat Field.'
Tell us about the first concert you ever saw.
It was Metallica and the Cult. I was with my friend Rob Shanner and his dad. This was the '...And Justice for All' tour. I remember them opening with 'Blackened' and at some point towards the end of the show, the big blindfolded Lady Justice they had on stage crumbled and broke apart. The crowd went insane and we had to leave. We were only like 12 or something.
What's your biggest vice?
Sadly the internet. I'm constantly online or on my phone.
What's the story behind your band name?
I just kind of spit it out one day, I don't remember how exactly it came about. It seemed like it fit the music we were making and was a little out of context as a band name. I also couldn't find any other band with the name so we grabbed it.
If you could tour with one band for 3 months, who would it be? Why?
Sonic Youth. They are the only band I can imagine watching everyday for three months. They have so many eras within their band that they could actually do a different show every night if they wanted to. And they travel all over the world so we'd end up in some places we've been wanting to go.
