"As much as people slag Bono, I will forever give him credit for engaging with George W. Bush when he was president," Butler has told NME. "Even though it was a deeply unpopular move, even in his own band." The singer met with Bush on multiple occasions during the former Texas governor's two terms in the White House, and in 2002 helped the president unveil a $5 billion aid package for the world's poorest countries.
"The HIV medications in Africa, every aspect of the US foreign policy -- it was a hell of a lot more than any president before had done," Butler said. "Bono was engaged in the work even though the situation wasn't ideal. That's not my path, but I will never fault someone for trying to be engaged in the world."
Butler himself has begun to get involved in philanthropic work of late, albeit in a slightly more discreet manner than the former Paul Hewson. In mid-July, the rocker pledged $1 million Canadian to Haitian charity Kanpe, provided members of the public match his band's contribution.
