New Pornographers Lash Out at 'Awful' Lady Gaga in Chicago

The group opened with 'Sing Me Spanish Techno' and immediately heads in the crowd bobbed up and down to the jangly tune. Case banged her tambourine and Bejar stumbled out late in the song to trade vocals with Case, A.C. Newman and Kathryn Calder.
After playing the revved 'Up in the Dark' from their latest album 'Together,' Newman asked the crowd, "Are you guys seeing Lady Gaga at Lolla?" It's going to be awful." Not holding anything back, Case took a shot at the diva: "At least I don't wear underwear on my head." Later on, Newman encouraged the crowd to see Green Day because they're punk, but then debated with his cohorts if Green Day was actually punk. The band sped through new songs 'Crash Years,' 'Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk,' 'Silver Jenny Dollar' and 'Moves' all the while keeping the audience dancing. Popping in and out during the set, a beer-drinking Bejar joined the band on 'Myriad Harbor, ' 'Jackie, Dressed in Cobras' and a few others then disappeared offstage.
The Pornographers mostly played their upbeat tunes like the hook-laden 'Use It' and 'Twin Cinema,' but slowed things down on 'Adventures in Solitude' and 'Go Places,' which gave Case her solo moment. The group played a couple of songs from their first record, 'Mass Romantic,' including the titular song and ended their almost two-hour set on the soaring 'The Bleeding Heart Show.' The crowd uproariously cheered for the Pornographers to come back, so they played a three-song encore replete with the folky 'Challengers,' the plucky 'My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism' and the sing-along 'Testament to Youth in Verse.' Newman and Case beseeched the audience to come see them at Lolla while Bejar held up his Corona and toasted the crowd, a harbinger for the upcoming weekend.
The New Pornographers play Lollapalooza's Budweiser stage on Friday at 4PM CT.

The New Pornos have been around for a decade you say fearlessweaver????????? They have many aclaimed CD's?????????? Horse Manure......In this 24/7 media saturated culture everyone knows you if your a hot band.......I never heard of these clowns????????? GAGA has probably made more money in the last year than this aclaimed band has made in a decade.........This is not Beethoven it's all crap pop music made for the moment and the money like it has been since Elvis........

Why would the band take a swipe at Lady Gaga in their show before her act came on later? That's very disrespectful to an artist who had a huge run of hits the past 20 months to 2 years now. She had 7 straight top 10 hits and now they want to bash her like that? I think that this is no different than when a few heavy metal bands took a swipe at teen idols New Kids on The Block's run of 9 straight top 10 hits during 1989 and 1990. Hard sounding artists attacking the clean cut and polished. Just accept the music and keep your opinions to YOURSELF!!!!!!!

Bette Davis was once asked about the difference between herself and Joan Crawford, a long time rival. She said she was an actress. Joan is a movie star. Same goes in this case. Pornographers are musicians. Lady Gaga is a star. I'll take the actors and musicians over the stars any time.

There is more than enough room on the planet for different types of music as well as different personalities. I like The New Pornographers but I also like Lady Gaga. I will never let a person, band, or group determine whom I choose to listen to.

Most people at the Metro didn't know who they were. If they have been around for a decade they are not making much of a name for themselves. They should see Gaga's manager for some promotional tips!
