In an interview with Spin magazine the bassist for the Seattle grunge band – who recently topped the bill at the Lollapalooza festival -- confirmed that he is technically homeless after breaking up with his girlfriend and has resorted to sleeping wherever he can.
When asked where he lives, he said, "Nowhere. Literally. I've been sleeping on studio couches and at friends' houses. I'm totally broke."
Shepherd also revealed how hard he took the bands initial break-up, admitting that he got addicted to painkillers. He added, "My whole life seemed over. Soundgarden broke up; my other band, Hater, broke up; my fiancée broke up with me; and then I broke three ribs. I got addicted to pain pills, drank a ton, and wound up OD'ing on morphine. I was laid out in my house for five days, and no one knew it."
Earlier this year Soundgarden announced plans to reform after a 13-year absence, as previously reported by Spinner. It has also been revealed that the Chris Cornell-led band will join forces with the team behind the video game Guitar Hero, striking a deal to ensure a hits compilation will come packaged the first copies of 'Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock'.

Oh my god, I can't believe the dumbass comments from you people. Ben was JOKING when he said that stuff. He is NOT a drug addict and he is NOT broke. He owns a bar and two homes. He was kidding when he said he was staying on people's couches. Doesn't anyone have a sense of humor anymore?
Soundgarden has always been drug-free. If the guys made certain substance choices after the fact, those choices didn't involve Soundgarden.
playing bass is a thankless job, like bartending.

August 22 2010 at 7:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replysome actually find that they owe the record companies money.look at the girl group TLC.their record sold 17 mil copies and as a group made less than one mil,$330,000.each,before taxes.and they sold 17 million copies of that album,so the record co's get rich and the artist gets to see the world, perform 220+ nights a year, and come home with a few bucks in their pocket, compared to the record co that made probably 50 million of that record, and the distributors that made probably about ten million, and the record co's wonder why there is such a huge problem with file sharing,i mean really? its all about an idie label, and selling out of the trunk.
if you sell ten thousand copies at ten bucks a piece, thats a hun thou in your pocket.
Time for a government bailout! Seriously though, I've been there myself when I was younger. I lost a lot of weight being poor, broke and walking everywhere. Very humbling experience. It was the inspiration I needed to get my sh*t together though. Not many people get a second chance like he has been given. Hopefully he'll skip the booze and drugs and manage his money a little better this time around. Good luck, Ben!
August 19 2010 at 2:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythe problem is that record companies really rip off these bands.the bands are so hungry for a deal ,in the beginning that they sign whatever deal they are offered, record a few albums, tour the world,if the album goes platinum(1mil sold)then the band will usually take about $420,000.00 as a whole, then the band has to pay engineers, video costs, union dues, production costs are the responsibility of the artist, tho the record co will front them the money.
so after that ,an individual an average band will take home ,if they are lucky around $65,000(for 1mil records sold),before taxes, and the record company makes about 5 million(or more) for a platinum selling record. so while to some $65,000 would be a blessing, its really not that much in the real world, why do you think some of these bands stay around so long with out going away?stones,kiss,etc...they come off the tour to find that they didnt make as much as they thought they were going to,and head back to the studio to do it all again...
