Happy Mondays Star Bez Jailed After 'Insane' Attack on Ex-Fiancee

Bez has been jailed for four weeks after trying to strangle his ex-fiancee in a fight over money.

Manchester Magistrates' Court heard that the former Happy Mondays maracas shaker -- his real name being Mark Berry -- flew into an "insane" rage after accusing Monica Ward, the mother of his two-year-old son, of stealing cash from him. The court heard that he put his hands around her neck and tried to throttle her.

The British star was initially given a community order and was asked to pay $695 (£450) in costs. But he was jailed after he ranted in court that he was going to ignore the sentence.

He said, "I'm not doing it. Bothered. I'm going to appeal and take this to a real court."

In response, chair of the magistrates Marie Cash told the former 'Celebrity Big Brother' winner he was going to jail for one month.

According to MailOnline, Berry then shouted, "Victory is in my grasp," as he was handcuffed and taken down to the cells.

Earlier, his former partner had told the court that Berry had been "looking insane" as he put his hands around her neck, kicked down a door and threatened to kill her after she called the police.

Berry claimed he was acting in self-defense during the incident, which happened on May 24 at the pair's home in Manchester.

The star, who went bankrupt two years ago, was also convicted today of using unlawful violence to gain entry into their home and given a restraining order preventing him from contacting his former partner of five years.
