At a show in Denver, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong announced that the concert was being recorded for a live album, then announced that the band would be performing a new track. That song, 'Cigarettes and Valentines,' was originally slated to be the title track of Green Day's follow-up to 2000's 'Warning' album. The band was close to completing the record, which would have featured a return to their earlier punk sound. but the master tapes were stolen. Rather than redo their work, the band scrapped the material and returned to the studio to record 'American Idiot.'
Green Day have previously announced that they were in the demo stages of their next studio album. This as-yet-untitled live disc would be their second after 2005's 'Bullet in a Bible,' which featured many 'American Idiot' tracks and several of their older hits. Check out the performance of 'Cigarettes and Valentines' below.
