The Sun reported on Weezer's performance at Reading and Leeds, where frontman Rivers Cuomo told the crowd, "People have always asked us about our song 'Teenage Dirtbag'.
"Sometimes I don't have the heart to embarrass and tell them it's not our song.
"So we just started playing it - and now it is our song."
Wheatus originally released the song in 2000 and reached No. 2 in the UK singles chart. It also featured as part of the soundtrack to the film 'Loser.'
Cuomo also expressed his joy to be back playing in the UK, saying, "I love the crowd here. They like to connect to me. They've been waiting five years to see us and still know all the lyrics.
"I'm addicted to my fans. It's borderline weird. As soon as I'm offstage, I'm straight on Twitter.
"We had a camcorder link straight to Ustream in our dressing room so people could see us doing our vocal warm-ups and getting ready."
