"The other night in my room, I ate an entire box of Count Chocula by myself," Damian Abraham, aka Pink Eyes, the lead singer of the Toronto's artsy hardcore sextet F----ed Up, said Sunday afternoon in the resort's Starlight Ballroom. "I just want you to know this is not a fat suit. This is earned."
At that point, three songs into his group's set, the bald, proudly corpulent frontman had already smashed a Coke can against his head and stuck Oreos to his bare chest. He was still a good 20 minutes from ripping into the bag of cereal -- Coco Puffs, by the look of it -- some fan had the foresight to bring along.
Abraham would eventually empty the contents of said bag into the audience, where he spent most of the performance. As he barked along with the bass, three guitars and drums raging away onstage, Abraham stampeded through the pit, high-fiving some fans, allowing others to jump on his back. F---ed Up is not a band for people with germ phobias or gluten allergies. Stand close enough to the front, and you're bound to feel the singers sweat and taste his discarded foodstuffs. You'll also be forced to catch somersaulting stage divers.
"This cord is limiting my reach," Abraham said later in the show, standing as far out on the dance floor as his microphone cable would allow. "But I assure you I'm with you in spirit, you in the comfortable seats."
After the scream-along standout 'Crusades,' Abraham slipped out of his white basketball shorts and finished the set dressed only in black boxer-briefs. He'd earlier confessed to smoking marijuana to ease his anxiety, and given the casual way he hiked up his undies and wore them like a thong, the herbal treatments seem to be working.
