The omens weren't looking good when support act Fanzine encountered their own problems with one of the amps hired by the headliners for the dates, having to stop twice as it continually cut out. However these seemed sorted as Cymbals' -- returning to the UK for the first time since Glastonbury Festival -- launched into their ferocious brand of extended college rock, only for the issues to resurface during 2009's '...And The Hazy Sea.'
From there on it was a hapless evening endured for all concerned as both keyboard and guitar amps began malfunctioning. Clearly upset, the group tried gamely to remain upbeat between the ensuing lengthy breaks but their frustration seethed out and took aim at an unlikely target, bassist Matthew Whipple saying, "This place is hip. I believe Neon Indian played here recently; that guy's [Alan Palomo's] a douche. He's not to be trusted," in reference to the Texan's headlining show at the same venue on Sept. 4.
In fairness to the group they eventually rallied to finish their set, angered determination bleeding through last single 'Wind Phoenix (Proper Name),' but they'll be hoping for a smoother ride during their remaining four UK dates, culminating at End of the Road Festival over Sept. 10 to 12.
