The three cassettes were recorded by Phair in her parents house on a four-track machine and were passed around by many of her early fans. She eventually sent one of the tapes to Matador, which signed her and released her debut album, 'Exile in Guyville,' in 1993. Many of the 'Guyville' tracks, including 'Johnny Sunshine,' 'Divorce Song' and 'Fuck and Run' originally appeared on the Girly Sound demos.
Phair went on to remake several other Girly Sound songs for future albums, but the full set has never been officially released until now. The two-disc version of 'Funstyle,' the surprise self-released album that originally appeared in July on Phair's website, will be out on Oct. 19 via Rocket Science Ventures. Phair is slated to play alongside Pavement, Guided by Voices and a slew of other indie favorites at Matador's 21st birthday celebration that will run in Las Vegas from Oct. 1-3.
