"'Cityscapes' is about any city or place that has challenged you or made you a better person," the singer-songwriter tells Spinner. "For me, in particular, it's about New York City and Los Angeles. Both cities make my mind race and my heart race. They make me work hard and play hard and be exactly who I am."
And who is Costello, exactly? The emerging talent has been taking cities -- and audiences -- by surprise with her deeply personal songs about life here on planet earth. But, interestingly enough, only Costello's hands and arms appear in the video (the tattoo on her left wrist is the dead giveaway). Also of note: neither New York nor Los Angeles -- nor any other city, for that matter -- are featured in the video, either. There are no skylines or skyscrapers, no subways or highways and definitely no late-night diners.
"We wanted to make the video for 'Cityscapes' a reflection of the genuine creative excitement that cities inspire," explains Costello. That leaves a lot to the imagination, and also makes for a crafty and charming video that you won't want to miss.
