Now, it seems that type of person is responsible for the cancellation of a New Pornographers gig at Michigan's Calvin College. According to MLive.com, too many people affiliated with the Christian college couldn't get past the band's name and the only resolution to the matter was to cancel the Oct. 15 concert.
"After weeks of discussion and consideration, the irony of the band's name was impossible to explain to many," the college said in a statement. "The band's name, to some, is mistakenly associated with pornography. Consequently, Calvin, to some, was mistakenly associated with pornography. Neither the college nor the band endorses pornography."
It seems that the people couldn't understand that bandleader Carl Newman named the group after a 1966 Japanese film called 'The Pornographers.' Even though the school says that it was an amicable decision with the band, we'd love to hear what the always-outspoken Neko Case would have to say about the situation.
Refunds for the show, which was to take place at the Calvin Fieldhouse Complex, are being issued now. The band is touring through Europe and North America into December.

I agree that the college was foolish to book this band knowing the name in advance; one would think there would be an inkling of concern.
Having said that, the people who say the band is promoting porn need to get their own minds out of the gutters. Open your mind a little bit. Listen to the band's music. Read their lyrics. See if you can find any indication that they're kiddie diddlers (as some of the more moronic comments have suggested) or anti-Christian (as others have suggested) or anything more than darn good musicians. Please.
why call yourselves "pornographers" and then say you're not in favor of that? Duh! Call yourself whatever you want but others have the right to object and cancel.
Stupid name anyway.
It's a dumb name. The first thing anyone thinks of when they hear the word 'pornography' is pornography. No one thinks of sunsets and trees swaying in the gentle wind, nor do they think of fast cars or bungie jumping. The choice of name is just an attempt to gain attention and shock people, pure commercialism. All bands try to come up with something to attract attention and they always have. It's a rough competition out there so if your music can't get you noticed, pick a shock name. It's still a dumb name to me and their silly excuse that they picked it after a 1966 japanese film is a crock. They know what pornography brings to everyone's mind and it sure isn't some unheard of old japanese film.

SatrdyWait you are uninformed about Sharia Law and the abilities of this giant monster moving through our land. They are instructed to lie to the infidel to put them to sleep and they are good at it. Sharia Law is exactly what Muslims are working on as we sleep. Look at France, England, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. Australia is the only country I know of who said NO to
the creeping demands of Islam. You seem to defend porn? You'll love Sharia Law, Mr.Reilly. They will cut your head off while they sleep with your nine-year-old sister. Wake up, stupid. Wake up.
I don't understand you people. What the heck are people supposed to think when they see the name "Pronographers"? Pronography, of course!!! DUH !! And a relegious college would naturally be repelled. The reason for the name given above doesn't explain anything. Named after a Japanese Movie I'm sure nobody ever heard of and exactly what did the title mean if it didn't mean---PROGRAPHY?!!

They choose a shi**y name for their band and then wonder why a school doesn't want them there. I feel no sympathy for them and am not surprised that they were cancelled, regardless of whatever their music sounds like. Grow up, pick a better name for your band that isn't for the sole purpose of getting attention and being thought dirty, and I'd completely side with them on something like this. Sorry, I think the school has a right to how they feel on this one.

Not as much fire and fun as extremism but usually closer to the truth. Extreme Muslims and Extreme Christians have, throughout history, been pretty much the same kind of righteous creatures. The quieter, loving Christians and he peaceful muslims, though viewing God differently and praying in a different format are actually similar.
I can't presume for Gods attitude about these things but I like to think that God's plan encompasses all including the extremes and that this somehow is His Truth.
just listen to their music. they are great and not a perverce line in all their songs. Clavin College has something up their ass and it is not champion higher education for loftier thinking. how sad to have to go to such a short sighted school.

They were two older gentlemen who played guitar and sang. Someone in the neighborhood called the owner of the company and told him we had belly dancers. Even after I explained that it was just the name of the group, he made me take it down and put their names up. Of course, this directive came with a lecture about "perception". I still don't get it!
