The Clash's Mick Jones Urges Fight to Save 100 Club

As a member of legendary punk band the Clash, guitarist Mick Jones has fonder memories of central London venue the 100 Club than most. Back in 1976, the Clash joined the Sex Pistols, the Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Vic Godard and the Subway Sect at the first punk festival at the venue -- an event which set in motion a musical revolution the effects of which are still being felt today.

However, as previously reported in Spinner, the 100 Club is facing closure at the end of the year thanks to spiralling rents.

Speaking exclusively to Spinner, Jones expressed his dismay the threat facing the iconic venue.

"I'm sorry to hear it might be closing," the guitarist said. "It will be greatly missed if it closes. Someone should start a campaign to save it."

A campaign has already started on Facebook and has already enlisted hundreds of fans. Would Jones help save the venue?

The guitarist spoke to Spinner at at the start of Arthur's Day, the global celebration in honour of Arthur Guinness and the signing of the lease on St. James's Gate brewery.

"If someone's going to do something and I'm available then I'd love to help. You have to balance it with the fact that life changes, but I'd love to help."

So punks now want to preserve for nostalgia?
If it's poorly run, as other reports on on it finances seem to suggest, let it go to the wall. The main reason the current owner is looking to raise funds is to pay off his debts allowing him to then sell the rights to the brand name. There are loads of great venues in London why rally to save a dying breed when you can champion the new.
As MJ says "life changes".

Mick's right. It's not something you can change with a benefit gig. Only way it could be helped is by reminding the world about its heritage... If I were a rich man etc etc.. Only thing I can suggest is this:
I'm in a Clash tribute band. I know a brilliant Pistols trib.. get a couple more and re-create the 100 Club's heyday...
