Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Barat said, "I was holding so much in my head. It was kind of just like getting clarity for myself."
The book is titled "Threepenny Memoir: the Lives of a Libertine." It covers events from the early, hopeful days of the Libertines up until the band's reunion this year.
As reported by Spinner, the reunited Libertines played Leeds and Reading festivals in August.
Describing the book, Barat said, "The book, rather than being like an autobiography or a memoir, is like more like a statement of a time. All these different stories and versions of events -- even I get confused.
"I wrote down mine in a very conversational tone. It would have been easy to write something that you'd have to trudge through, that was really weighty."
However, Barat claims that that route would have made for a far less amusing book. "I'd have written about all the depression and things, but I thought that wouldn't have been a very enjoyable read. It's quite humorous."
The book is due to be released on Friday, Sept. 30 while Barat's eponymous debut solo album is due for release in early October.
