Doris Day: 1950s Fresh-Scrubbed Jazz-Pop Singer and Actress
Taylor Swift: Current-Day Squeaky-Clean Country-Pop Singer and Actress
How History Repeats Itself: Middle America loves a wholesome, blond heroine. And with their squeaky-clean images, sparrow-like voices and cloyingly pleasant pop ditties, Doris Day and Taylor Swift neatly fill(ed) the position of All-American sweetheart for their respective generations. More than just one-trick ponies, both gals proved to have a modest talent for awkward comedy – for Day, this translated into being one of the era's biggest box office stars for a time; Swift managed to convert a cabal of haters with her successful hosting gig on 'Saturday Night Live.' Oh, and both achieved fame by playing the romantic foil to dreamboats dogged by rumours about their sexuality.

Taylor Swift is a nice, entertaining person. But if you saw her singing with Stevie Nicks (was it Reannon? I forget), you know that she was bad. Doris Day had a great voice and is the top female box office star of all time.

Women who rock: Ann Wilson of Heart, Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Raitt, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Melissa Etheridge. I could go on & on. Nothing against people like Taylor swift or Beyonce, or Lady Gaga, but they don't constitute ROCK in my opinion.

And sorry, but Swift's face is like one of those new, *heavily made-up* Barbies. Judy's is so much more real somehow.
It's fantastic how musicians and artists produce the soundtrack to the various times of our lives.
There's always something new and interesting out there.
I am a musician and arranger, and pleased to say that I honestly enjoy good, melodic music of every type (except rap - I really don't get that at all). I have 20 years experience of arranging music, principally for female vocalists.
I like Taylor Swift, she is undoubtedly talented and beautiful, but only time will tell if she has captured hearts and minds in quite way as Doris Day.
I suppose that a fair measure could only have been made if they had emerged at the same time.
Musically, however, there is no comparison between Doris Day and Taylor Swift.
There are several reasons for this, and it isn't just the age thing: Doris Day is obviously technically the better vocal artist, has wider appeal and her work will always be appreciated.
To be a vocal artist when Doris started out you had to be exceptional (not just good) at your craft; have excellent projection, excellent tuning throughout your range, very often singing without amplification, and certainly without any electronic processing.
What the singer did was what the audience heard, there was no hiding and no adjustments were available.
Doris almost always delivered a perfect recording in a single take - that is unheard of these days.
Added to this Doris' personality, likeability, natural beauty and the way that both men and women identify with her humour and expressiveness even to this day.
That is why Doris was such a star, she really did have it all. Taylor may well be a promising contemporary artiste, so let's give her a chance to shine. As said, I like Taylor Swift and I like Doris Day, but realistically, it is very unlikely that Taylor will surpass Doris, musically and/or professionally.
In fact, I would put money on Doris always being more popular than Taylor, regardless of timescale.
Hi, Whoever wrote this article comparing Taylor Swift to Doris Day must be on crack. Taylor can't even sing. When you listen to the female singers to-day, their diction is atrocious . When Doris Day sang you knew every word she said, when she sang the lyrics. Enogh said ......Ken

Taylor DOES have talent and she CAN sing. If you don't like her then why do you even bother commenting?
I think Doris Day was probably the last talented pop artist before Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is the rare popular singer today that is pretty (but not skanky), smart, and talented. She's insanely great at writing songs (better than anyone else I've ever heard!), her voice is soft and pretty, and she's such a sweetie! :)
October 02 2010 at 4:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's actually a good comparison. :)
Unlike most popular singers, Taylor Swift isn't a dumb, worthless, talentless ***** and her music and voice are actually good! She is an unbelievably talented song-writer and she has the voice and the face of an angel. There should be more singers like that. :)
"Untalented" and "Taylor Swift" DO NOT belong in the same sentence. She's got a great voice, a lovely figure, a pretty face, amazing songs, beautiful music, and she's a very talented guitar player and a very talented song-writer. AND she's a great role model! She's the best song-writer and the best singer of this generation!
