Cat Power Playing 'All' Instruments on Upcoming Record

Cat Power, the smokey-voiced beauty also known as Chan Marshall, is finally hitting the studio to record a follow-up to 2008's 'Jukebox.' This time, she wants to take an even more active role in the recording process by playing multiple instruments on the new album. While Marshall used to mainly play solo with sparse help from backing musicians like Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, her recent material has found her in more of a classical lead singer position with her powerful Dirty Delta Blues backing band handling the heavy lifting.

"I'm working on a new album and I'm trying to play all the instruments myself," Marshall told Rolling Stone over the weekend in Las Vegas. "There's an inspiration in being furious that you want to achieve your goals. I think I was inspired by being disappointed in myself that I'd just been holding the microphone and I was disappointed in myself that I hadn't been playing an instrument."

For Marshall, picking up a guitar or hammering out some piano chords is a big commitment, but she's ready to return to the fold with some of the uniquely sparse instrumental treatments that made her rough-edged earlier work so endearing to fans.

" I wanted to prove to myself that I could try to create a relationship with it [playing an instrument] again and feel like I felt close to it," she explained. "It's definitely there and it's a need [for me to play], but it hasn't been around."

To date, Marshall has given no indication when the new record will be complete.
