Albini, a Chicago-based engineer and the unofficial leader of Shellac, has manned the boards and worked microphone magic at Electrical Audio since 1997. The Breeders, Guided by Voices, the Stooges and hundreds of smaller rock bands have all logged substantial time within its confines. Albini owes about $230,000 on his mortgage, but Midgett believes that hitting that goal is definitely possible.
"I think the place should be paid off by now, and I think we have the ability to do it," Midgett wrote on the donation page. "I know this campaign will be an embarrassment to owner Steve Albini, but it will be an embarrassment to the rest of us if it fails. Sort of. I don't know, I just want to see if it will work. 2000 people, $115 each, and it's done."
Thus far, the campaign has raised nearly $40,000 -- an impressive total considering that the drive has only been running since late last week. Check out the page here and kick in a few bucks if you still like your rock without a glossy, ultra-compressed sheen.
