Each week, in Picture Book, we present an iconic photo from rock 'n' roll's past or present, accompanied with insightful commentary. Whether it's a famous picture or an unearthed rarity, these striking images will serve to illustrate the visual side of music.
Dusty Springfield, 1963
Sporting the trademark beehive hairdo and dark eye makeup that would inspire drag queens throughout the UK, Dusty Springfield drinks a cup of tea in 1963. That year, Dusty left the Springfields, a London-based country/folk trio also featuring her brother Tom that had just begun to crack the US charts, to pursue a solo career singing soul tunes. Her first single, 'I Only Want to Be With You,' would become a hit not long after this photo. Later, she would be credited with introducing Motown to Britain. Springfield died of cancer in 1999, 11 days before she was to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
